HP LaserJet 200 color M251nw
macOS 10.14 Mojave

I have had a LaserJet 200 color M251nw for a few years. It's very low usage and most of the cartridges are the "introductory" ones that came with it.

I replaced the black cartridge a couple of years back and the printer refused to display supply levels for it although I was fairly sure I had bought a genuine one. That replacement was a couple of months old (I had bought it when the supply started looking low and kept it on the shelf "just in case") so I just sighed and moved on.

Today I replaced the introductory Cyan cartridge with a brand new, genuine HP cartridge (confirmed by scanning the security hologram) and I am having the same problem: the printer claims it's a "used supply" and won't indicate supply status.

I have tried removing and reinserting the cartridge a couple of times, and power cycling the printer. I have installed the latest HP drivers. I have gone through the console menus and asked it whether I have old firmware (it says there is no new firmware, my 20150212 is the latest available). No change with any of these things.

How can I get my printer to recognise these genuine HP supplies?
