The ink has recently stopped sticking to multiple paper surfaces including checks designed for printing as well as plain white paper that has worked well in the past. Just wiping my finger across a printed document will smudge it even a day later

Hi KT48,
This means that the fuser unit is not working properly so that it can "dry" the toner onto the paper.
First of all, make sure you are using paper desinged for laser printers. Use paper from a new paper ream.
Then, that your printer's settings for the paper size and type are correct and the same as the paper being used.
If the above fail, remove the fuser unit and inspect it for any damage. Replace the fuser if necessary.
I hope these may help,
Cheers!
