I have a L7780 using Vista, XP and MAC OS. When tray 1 is empty, the printer does not automatically draw/pull from Tray 2. I receive an "out of paper" condition. I have reset the printer to the factory defaults and have re-installed the latest computer drivers. This feature is published on page 40 of the user manual. According to HP, this feature does not exist, however, I find that hard to believe since the manual states it does and I belive at one time my printer did move to Tray 2 when Tray 1 was empty. I am using the LL780 in a network setting with multiple computers. The most current driver and firmware is installed. I did locate the following link that discusses an "out of paper condition." I tried all of the suggestions and it still does not work. I am using plain white paper for both trays.

My first quesiton is, has anyone gotten the LL7780 to automatically select Tray 2 when Tray 1 was empty?
Second, if so, did it only work when Tray 1 was empty to begin with or did the printer use up all the paper on Tray 1 and then automatically move to Tray 2.
Thank you!

I also have a L7780 using XP on a wired network with the same problem. I know that when I first tested the printer it would pull from Tray 2 automatically when Tray 1 ran out of paper. That "feature" seems to have gone away in only a couple of weeks. Looking for answers myself as nothing I've done so far brings that capability back. Tray 2 does work fine when I set it to default.
Thanks much!

I believe that all internal pages and reports(excluding copies) are printed from Tray 1 by default, and not by tray 2. This is not a hardware issue, but it's how it was probably designed to work.
