I have a L7780 using Vista, XP and MAC OS. When tray 1 is empty, the printer does not automatically draw/pull from Tray 2. I receive an "out of paper" condition. I have reset the printer to the factory defaults and have re-installed the latest computer drivers. This feature is published on page 40 of the user manual. According to HP, this feature does not exist, however, I find that hard to believe since the manual states it does and I belive at one time my printer did move to Tray 2 when Tray 1 was empty. I am using the LL780 in a network setting with multiple computers. The most current driver and firmware is installed. I did locate the following link that discusses an "out of paper condition." I tried all of the suggestions and it still does not work. I am using plain white paper for both trays.

My first quesiton is, has anyone gotten the LL7780 to automatically select Tray 2 when Tray 1 was empty?

Second, if so, did it only work when Tray 1 was empty to begin with or did the printer use up all the paper on Tray 1 and then automatically move to Tray 2.

Thank you!

From the Solution Center window click on settings. Go to printer settings and click on Printer Toolbox.  In the toolbox click on the services tab.  Then click on paper handling.  Set default tray to tray 2 and lock tray 1.  This will allow you to print 8.5 x 11 paper from tray 2 while using tray 1 for special paper printing jobs.  Which means if you want to print from tray 1 you will have to specify it when printing.

Thanks for your response. Can you please confirm that the feature that draws from Tray 2 if Tray 1 is empty works properly, as described on page 40 of the manual. The text is below: "By default, the device draws media from Tray 1. If Tray 1 is empty, the device draws media from Tray 2 (if it is installed and loaded with media)." -HP l7780 Manual, page 40. I have 8.5 X 11 paper in both trays and would want the printer to draw from Tray 2 after Tray 1 no longer has paper in it. Thanks!

I also have a L7780 using XP on a wired network with the same problem.  I know that when I first tested the printer it would pull from Tray 2 automatically when Tray 1 ran out of paper.  That "feature" seems to have gone away in only a couple of weeks.  Looking for answers myself as nothing I've done so far brings that capability back.  Tray 2 does work fine when I set it to default.

Thanks much!

One opinion from HP technical support is that perhaps a Window's update caused the function to go away. I have two 7780's and computers running Apple O/S, Vista and XP and all of them behave the same way; does not pull from tray 2. I also tried to use the copy function on the printer and the same result occurred.

I think the problem is that HP may build good printers, but they can't do software for beans. I have owned plotters, laserjets and AIO's. Since my old G85xi and including my L7780 I can't get full functionality. I think this will be my last HP purchase.

Dexter, Excellent find. Thank you so much. The firmware upgrade worked fine with my new HP L7780. Well done.

This firmware update did not fix the problem of the fax confirmation report pulling only from Tray 1. Please revisit the issue. I can't leave envelopes in Tray 1 if I use fax confirmation reports, even after the firmware update.

Keith,

I believe that all internal pages and reports(excluding copies) are printed from Tray 1 by default, and not by tray 2. This is not a hardware issue, but it's how it was probably designed to work.
