The mac address on the printer should not change when doing a firmware update on the printer.
I hope this is the information you were looking for.

I've just spent 3 hours trying to update the firmware on my P1102w to add AirPrint support.
Previously I was running whatever firmware was already installed on the system when I bought it a couple of years ago.
For the last 2 years it has worked perfectly. Now it seems the last 3hrs I've been attempting to get all this working has been down simply to powering off losing all network credentials.
Updating the firmware has essentially made this printer useless. Using an unsecured network isn't an option, I'm using a Belkin router, that's happily been workign with this printer for the last 2 years.
I'm using WEP, and changing that is not an option, so don't suggest it. Why should I have to completely reconfigure my network and 25-30 or so other devices purely because a firmware update screwed up my printer? Especially when reconfiguring it doesn't even resolve the issue (from what I've read on the other posts).
I've been using HP laserjets for the last 20 years, but this will be the last one I ever buy. Looking at how long this issue's been going on, it's painfully obvious that HP no longer gives a **bleep** about its customers. You won't be getting any more of my money.

EXACTLY! I'm not sure how that piece of information keeps getting ignored by the posters suggesting setting a static IP. A static IP does zero good when the printer can't authenticate to the router!! This is networking 101.

Hello
When updating any printers firmware should be done by a usb connection.
Here are some steps for resetting up the wireless again on the printer.
I would reset the printer first to clear out any previous network settings.
Turn the printer off, hold down the wireless button and cancel (x button) while turning the printer back on and don't release the two buttons until the printer stops making noise.

Print out a configuration report and make sure the ssid and ip address are cleared.
(hold down the x button and when the printer makes a noise let go)
After the reset, disconnect the routers power cable, wait 10 seconds, then reconnect the power cable. Wait till it's ready.
Since the software is already installed then I would setup the wireless again by connecting the printer by usb to the computer temporarily.
Then go to start, all programs, hp, laserjet, wireless configuration wizard, follow the steps to setup the wireless.
Then try and print.
I would recommend setting up a static ip to resolve any future issues for losing the printer over wireless connection.

This is such a joke. Do you not see the similarity in many of the problem descriptions? After upgrading firmware the printer nolonger can remember its IPs, hense It useless as a wireless printer. Most people ( that haven't thrown their printers out) will have converted into just you run-of-the-mill USB tethered printer.
1.Yes we have tried static Ip.
2.reduced our security to open wep
3. and everything else that you have suggested.
Yet it is simply a USB printer. I hlready have 2 HP USB printers and a HP network color printer. I purchased this HP for it's wireless capability.
Is there anyway to return to the factory firmware when it used to remember authencation and IP?
BTW... the only reason I'm responding is that I innocently asked for updates as to whether you have taken the time to fix this issue and everytime there is an update I ignorantly return to this site and read the same trash that you put out.

TOTALLY agree with John above.
The printer loses its IP because it LOSES ITS WIFI CREDENTIALS !!!! Why is this fact seemingly not sinking in to those replying with 'help' in the form of some boiler-plate suggestions straight off the HP support pages? For the last time, the suggested steps do not work, period.
Take a few minutes and figure out why the WiFi credentials are not being propertly written to the machine's EPROM and are therefore getting lost at each power down. It's really a simple problem and should be a simple solution.
What utter incompetence.

I understand that you have set the static ip and the printer is still loosing the wireless connectivity.
For most cases the setting of the static ip does resolve the issue.
I would like to be able to help you with this issue.
Here is a post from HP pcwizard to try.
Please provide the following information so I can assist you better.
What is the make and model of your router/modem? (Modem/router/2 routers/booster/airport/switch)
What security encryption are you using?
How far is the printer from the router?
Is there any major objects between the line of sight of the router and printer?
Check these setting on the router and please provide the results.
The wpa key setting needs to be on aes to work correctly not tkip.
If it is set to 64 bit encryption then change it to 128 bit.
Multi casting needs to be turned on.
If it is set to a 5 ghz network you may need to change to 2.4 ghz.
Printer is on 2.4ghz.

That doesn't work, either. The printer loses its WiFi credentials.
It is therefore not able to authenticate to the router regardless of the router's setup. This is NOT a problem with any brand or setup of the wireless router. It is a problem with how the printer is storing (and losing) the security key to the
router - again, regardless of the router's security structure.
If you can, please explain why a firmware update to the printer seems to be the cause of everyone's problem here and yet you continue to suggest that the solution is to change the WiFi router settings. The router settings we are all using worked perfectly prior to the firmware upgrade.
Can anyone talk directly to the HP engineers who designed this firmware upgrade and ask some questions about the WiFi credential storage differences between this firmware and prior versions? If I was an HP rep and actually trying to help people, that's where I'd start.

I agree with you. It is not a setup-problem with the router or static-ip or whatever configuration. Everything worked fine until my first firmware-update. I bought two of the P1102W at the same time. One for my mother and one for me. My mother is running with the original-firmware and wifi is working well.
I use a stupid workaround with a repeater, which provides an open wifi. For printing, I have to start the repeater and the printer. Hopefully, I don't forget to turn of the repeater after printing.
