I love my HP LaserJet 4P and it has been a workhorse for about 20 years. I recently had to get another computer and they don't have parallel ports anymore so I got an adapter cable to run the printer from my pc with a USB connection. My friend got the LaserJet working with the new PC, and then Windows 10 did an upgrade and now a message comes up that there is a printer error when I try to print. How do I correct this?

Hi:
See if this link is of any help.
http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-2737935/add-printer-windows.html
My printers installed automatically in W10, since they are relatively new.

Hi:
See if this works...
Download and save the 6th file on the list at the link below...64 bit.
http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=LaserJet%204P
Download and install this free file utility. The 2nd file at the top of the page is for 64 bit.
http://7-zip.org/download.html
After you install 7-zip, right click on the printer driver file you downloaded and saved.
Select 7-Zip from the menu, and have 7-Zip Extract to: and let it extract the file into its folder name.
Use the add printer wizard to install your printer, and when you get to the part where you are asked to install the driver, click in Have Disk and browse to the driver file 7-Zip created>prnhp001 (setup information file), select the HP LaserJet 4P from the list of printers, and see if the driver installs that way.

I am trying to follow your steps, which seem very clear. In the list of printers in my Printers and Scanners window, there are two for HP LaserJet 4P. One has an error, and the other reads (copy 1). Do I need to uninstall these before proceding?
Also, I had to get an adapter cable to my printer so it is now plugging into my PC as a USB. What do I click when it asks for the Printer Port?

I also have a 4P since 1993. Slow but great printer. I also use parallel to usb cable.
Every time Windows 10 is upgraded I have the same issue. It usually takes me a while to recover, but this time I am stumped.
HELLO MS!! It sure would be nice if you would save and restore user settings with your Windows upgrades.
