Microsoft Windows 11

Guys and girls . We have owned a LaserJet Pro 3202dw for a few years now and was happy running 3rd party toner cartridges till it went pop and died with strong electrical smell. So I bought a new replacement one to be able to use the stock of toner I have amassed .

But the firmware is to high and I cant get the old onr to power on to check the version that was working.

Is there anywhere I should be looking for the firmware ? Im shocked that HP dont offer older firmware on their site .

I use lenovo Laptops and I can foll the Bios version back to the date of manufacture from their site .

The tonner cartridges I have are 3rd party and do come with a chip fitted. I use these because I dont need proffesional printing just things for me course work and they are fine . If HP oddered cheaper replacement cartridges they may make more money rather than charge full dollar and force end users to buy compatible

Hi  @mark1316,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I can understand why you'd like to continue using the toner cartridges you've already purchased, especially since they worked well with your previous printer.

To help us better understand the situation, could you kindly share a few additional details?

  • Are you receiving any specific cartridge-related messages or error codes?
  • Have you had an opportunity to test with an HP Original toner cartridge to compare the behaviour?

In the meantime, you may try the following steps:

  1. Power the printer off and disconnect the power cord for about 60 seconds.
  2. Remove the toner cartridge and inspect the chip area for any dust, damage, or protective material that may still be attached.
  3. Reinstall the cartridge, ensuring it is fully seated.
  4. Print a Supplies Status Report to verify whether the cartridge is being detected correctly.
  5. Access the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS) and note the installed firmware version.
  6. Check whether automatic firmware updates are enabled on the printer.

Kindly also refer to the HP document : HP Printers - Firmware Downgrade Is Not Recommended - HP Firmware Downgrade Guidance

Based on what you've described, your previous printer likely operated with a firmware version that was compatible with the chip technology used by your third-party toner cartridges. Since the replacement printer is a newer unit, it may include a different firmware version with updated security, reliability, and supplies-management features.

The document above explains that firmware updates are designed to enhance printer performance, security, and functionality. Because of these improvements, older firmware versions are not always made available, and firmware downgrades are generally not recommended.

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
