HP does not recommend firmware downgrades, always use the latest official HP firmware for improved functionality, security, and reliability.


How to update the firmware on an HP printer

Use one of the following methods to update the printer firmware.

1: Update from the printer control panel

  • Turn on the printer and make sure it is connected to the internet.
  • On the printer control panel, open Setup, Settings, or Tools.
  • Select Printer Maintenance or Update Printer.
  • Select Check for Updates or Web Services/Printer Update.
  • If a firmware update is available, select Yes, Update, or Install.
  • Wait for the update to complete. Do not turn off or disconnect the printer during the update.
  • The printer may restart automatically.

2: Update using the HP App

  • Open HP App on your computer or mobile device.
  • Make sure the printer is added to HP Smart and shows as Ready/Online.
  • Select your printer.
  • Open Advanced Settings, Printer Settings, or Tools.
  • Look for Firmware Update or Printer Update.
  • Select Check for Updates.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to install the firmware.

3: Download the firmware from HP Support

  • Go to HP Software and Driver Downloads.
  • Enter your printer model and select the correct printer.
  • Select your operating system if prompted.
  • Expand Firmware.
  • Download the latest firmware update available for your printer.
  • Run the downloaded firmware update utility.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Keep the printer powered on and connected until the update finishes.

Important: If the printer is working normally, check the firmware version and release notes before updating. A firmware update can change printer functionality or cartridge compatibility.
