Problem

When I load a business #10 envelope in the manual feed slot (face up, flap left) and print an envelope from MS Word 2016, the text prints in the correct orientation on the envelope. But most of the text prints off the top of the envelope. At best, I get a few lines from the "to" address showing at the very top.

Printing from lower tray
If I print the same envelope from the main paper tray onto 8.5 x 11 paper, the envelope text prints in the correct orientation but along the left side of the paper. The text is not vertically centered, as it would need to be to get all the text on the envelope if printing from the manual feed slot.

Temporary workaround
If I use the touch panel on the printer to set the Tray 1 type and size to envelope, envelopes print fine. (Menu choices Settings, System Setup, Paper Setup, Tray 1, Paper Type = Envelope, Paper size = Envelope).

But now everything else prints wrong. Even test prints from the main paper tray have a left margin down the middle of the page!

Printer driver
HP LaserJet MFP M227-M231 PCL-6.

Printer connection
Wireless connection via WSD port.

Touch panel printer settings (not workaround settings)
Default paper size = Letter
Default paper type = Plain
Manual Feed = Off
Tray Size Prompt = On
Tray 1 Size = letter

Print preferences
Printing shortcuts = Envelopes. This equates to Paper sizes = Envelope #10, Paper source = Printer auto select, Paper type = Envelope.

MS Word 2016 Settings
Envelope print position = center of page. (Menu choices Mailings, Envelopes, Options, Envelope Options, centered left to right (2nd setting from right), face up, feed from Automatically Select).

Paper size = Envelope #10 (Layout, Size, Envelope #10).

Print command = File, Print, Settings = Landscape orientation, Envelope #10.

Note envelopes print perfectly from Brother 2270dw laser printer with these identical settings.

Questions
How are others getting envelopes to print correctly on this printer?

What settings to I need to change to get envelopes to print with correct vertical positioning?

Thank you!

I solved my own problem.  Here are the settings that did the trick:

1)  On the printer control panel (or via EWS).  Default Paper size = Letter.  Default Paper Type = Plain.  Manual Feed = Off.  Tray Size Prompt = On.  Tray 1 Size = Any Size and Tray 1 Type = Any Type.

2)  Default Print Preferences.  Note Paper sizes = Letter, Paper source = Printer auto select, and Paper type = Unspecified.

3)  Print preferences for the envelope typed in MS Word 2016.   Paper sizes = Envelope #10.  Paper source = Printer auto select.  Paper type = Unspecified.

Hello, @drgrass - Greetings!

Thanks for reaching out! I'd like to help 🙂

I understand that you are facing issues while printing envelope #10 on your LaserJet M227printer. Great job on diagnosing the issue 🙂 It looks like you are doing everything the way it's supposed to be.

Did you check the paper feed option listed under Microsoft Word Envelope printing screen? Try changing the paper settings as mentioned here to print the envelopes: http://hp.care/2gmGFqw

Check the “Frequently asked questions”, follow the steps under “How do I print envelopes with Microsoft Word?”

Also, check this forum thread which solved similar issue: http://hp.care/2s8LzAq

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance.

Good luck 🙂
