When the "Shut Down After Inactivity" time expires (under Energy Savings) and the printer shuts down, should a print job wake the printer or does it need to be waken by pressing the power button.

Hi @Mazman,
Thanks for reaching out of the HP Support Forums!
I see that you would like to know why you're unable to print when you have "Shut Down After" selected on your HP Color LaserJet Pro M252dw Printer. I would be happy to look into this with you and please remember to return to this thread and mark 'Accept as Solution', if I have successfully helped you resolve the issue. If you wish to say 'thanks' for my effort to help, click the 'thumbs up' to give me a Kudos.
If you wish to be able to print to the printer without having to turn the printer on, do not use the Shut Down After mode, it turns the printer off.
I recommend using the "Sleep/Auto Off After" mode instead, that way the printer only goes to sleep, rather than shutting off.
I hope this helps. Please respond if you have any concerns. I hope you have a great day!

Drakster you said "If you wish to be able to print to the printer without having to turn the printer on, do not use the Shut Down After mode, it turns the printer off. "
One MUST choose a time under the Shut Down After mode, there is not an option "do not use". I selected 8 hours which is the max but if one sleeps in and 8 hours + has passed . . .
