macOS 10.14 Mojave

I just received a LaserJer Pro M404dn from Amazon.  It prints double-sided by default.  I cannot turn off double-sided printing using the "Hp Utility" or "HP Smart," or via the Print menu in Word or Adobe, or via System Preferences.  Please help!

Hi,
Follow these steps to disable two-sided printing:

Open the file you would like to print. From the File menu select Print. The Print window appears.

NOTE: The Print window might be minimized. Click the Show Details button to see all available settings.

If you see any Two-Sided or Duplex checkbox, uncheck it.

Click the Settings drop-down menu, it will usually appear as the name of the program (e.g. TextEdit)
Will appear as Copies & Pages within Microsoft Office applications.

Select Layout from the drop-down menu.

Set the Two-Sided option as Off.

You may save the settings as a preset by clicking Presets > Save Current Settings as Preset...
By doing so and completing the print job these settings will remain default till another preset will be used in the future.

I am afraid none of this works.  When I select Layout there is a "two-sided" drop-down menu but it was already set to "Off" and it is grayed-out.  I have turned off two-sided printing and duplex printing everywhere I can find but it has no effect.

What application are you printing from?

May you see any difference when printing from another application?

Also, access the printer EWS page.

Using the side arrows on the printer, locate Reports and press OK, then locate Configuration Report and press Ok.

Within the Network Information section, locate the printer's IP address and access it from your computer's browser.

Within the Print and Copy tabs, make sure that Duplex Printing is disabled for the printer defaults itself and check if you may see any difference.

I have tried printing from Word and Acrobat.

This printer has a wired conneciton and does not appear to support wireless printing.  The HP Network Config Page I printed indicates no IP address.

The Network Config Page itself came out single-sided.

Any further thoughts?  Is it actually possible to turn off duplex printing on this unit?

If you go into the Embedded Web Server of the printer you should be able to turn off duplexing as it sounds like it is set at the hardware level.  The menu map I have does not appear to offer access through the control panel so you will need to access the EWS. Option should be under print options. Sorry I do not have one connected that I can look at. Most printers are shipping with duplex on to meet higher levels of eco-ratings.
