I have a similar problem with my HP 2300 laserjet printer running on Windows 10. It prints fine with a parallel printer but I have a 1284 USB to parallel cable that I tried to use and it wouldn't work. For one thing, it's an older cable prior to Windows10 so could that be the problem? Also, I downloaded the driver but it didn't install. I didn't get a message that it wouldn't install, it was just that nothing happened after I opened the download. I saw in the manual that there is supposed to be a USB port in the printer, but I bought it used and I think it was removed if it was ever there. I'm sorry if I'm explaining this badly; do you think you could help me?

Does your printer is 1200 or 2300?
But no matter which it is both of them have USB & LPT port at the same time so you don't need 1284 USB to parallel cable and it may be the problem.
The USB port seats at above the LPT port look carefully you will find out.
