MFP M177fw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My Color Laserjet Pro MFP M177fw starts up and you can hear the internals all churning as normal, but the LCD panel stops at HP and Energy Star Logos. My new HP Pvailion laptop does see and recognizes the laptop, but cannot finish installation software.

The printer has worked before on wifi en cloud.

Bu now the printer will not print and will not fire up properly no matter what I do. That includes removing all cables and power drain as described in other messages on the forum. Also plugging in power directly in wall. But nothing can get it to fire up properly. It seems like a very common issue looking through the forum. So surely someone has learnt how to fix it.

I think a factory reset might do the trick, but I do not know how to.

Hi @Christiaan124,

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand that your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M177fw is stuck on the HP logo.

This issue could occur if the printer is in error state.

Let's go through a few steps to troubleshoot this issue.

And here's the step by step guide for you listed below:

1. Disconnect USB/Network/FAX and power on the Standalone unit.

2. Check and remove any packaging material inside the printer and toner cartridge.

3. Try different power source.

4. Perform a power cycle by unplugging the power cord while the power is on and plug it back.

5. Perform a power drain by disconnecting the power cord from the back of the printer and keeping the power button pressed for 30 seconds and in the case of a power switch keep the switch in ON position for 30 seconds before reconnecting the power cord.

6. Verify and update with the latest firmware.

7. Turn Off the printer for 3 min and then try turning On the unit.

You may update the firmware from the link: Firmware Update Utility

Let me know how this works.

You have a good day ahead.

Hi Rainbow 23,

thank you for your response,

first of all, this is a new account (same email adress) because the user-id-login-forget password function of the forum does not work, so I had to create new username/id

It's quite hard to get through all the redirect screens on hp by the way.

now to the printer : I tried all options (except firmware) but nothing worked.

Now I think I should not install firmware for the M225 series, since I have a M177fw serie, so I'm trying that now with this url :

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/closure/hp-color-laserjet-pro-mfp-m177-series/53034...

power button 30 seconds is a bit hard to reproduce, since when the printer is on (hp+energy logo on the screens) and I press the white power button on the side for 30 seconds, already after 3 seconds the printer shuts down, so not sure when to start the clock for the 30 seconds, and what to do after I pull the power swith back in (how long to keep powerbutton pressed)....

any more options would be helpfull.

I hope I still can access this account for follow up on firmware.

update on action 6 : firmware:

I donwloaeded the fimrware from

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-color-laserjet-pro-mfp-m177-series/5303438/model...

it shows a (dutch) 5 step process, step 1 "Prepare installation": is succesfully done

step 2 Connect the product has issues

it says it has detected the product, and the gif-image goes all the way to 99%, but after about 10 to 15 minutes it gives an error saying this exectuion took to long. A fatal error, being the reason the product can not be used.

I need to restart the computer and try again ({already did, same result) and contact on the website for more product support".... (Free dutch translation).

To summerize : all 7 steps were executed without the needed result : printer still can be found by computer and can make sounds while starting upm but is stuck in start up process with the HP logo and Energy Star logo on the screen.

Can I do anything else?

Hi @Christiaan124,

Thank you for your reply, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand that the issue has not resolved after following the steps mentioned in the previous interaction.

This could be a hardware issue with the unit.

Hence, please contact HP Phone Support for further assistance at the link: www.hp.com/contacthp
