I am an IT consultant for a variety of small businesses that use a Laserjet m402dn printer. The three different business that use this printer have all been getting an interesting issue when the printer runs out of paper. The normal "out of paper" message displays, but after they fill the tray the error remains and will not disappear. All of the common methods to remove this error, i.e. checking the paper type, fiddling with the paper settings, cleaning the rollers, checking the jam sensor, etc., have not worked. This error will even persist after a power cycle to reset the machine, the only thing I have got to work so far is to disable and re-enable the print spooler. This only works until the printer runs out of paper, then the error comes back and I have to do the same thing. Is there something I can do to get a permanent fix? If not, is there an easier way to fix this?

Is this error on the printer control panel or on the PC. If on the PC it is likely that you have the printer configured on a WSD port and windows has issues detecting changed in Status. Set up the printer driver to use a TCP/IP port instead and manually set the printer as default to stop Windows from managing the printer.

Hey Repairatrooper, (Clever name by the way)
Thanks for responding to my question so fast! To clarify a little more, the error is showing on the printer contol panel, and the printers are connected to the PC's in question over wi-fi. Your suggestions were very useful, but I do not think they apply here. Given that you now know a little more of my situation, do you know of anything else that may help my situation?
Thanks again for your help!

There are a couple of things that might be causing the problem. The paper tray may not be lifting completely. This is caused in most cases by paper level sensor in the tray moving out of place and blocking the metal plate from lifting completely. You can confirm this by looking at the left front tray for a nylon arm that has a C shaped end. The metal tray is supposed to go between the two arms of the C. If the C is completely over the metal tray then you need to work it back into position. There were also some failures of the paper level sensor in the printer. PN RM2-5375-000cn
