Hi, i am having an issue figuring out how to automate two sided scanning and printing. For printing, I can auto print two sided from my iphone, but on my laptop it only gives me a manual option only, can someone help? Also, on scanning, is it not an automated 2 sided. I was able to do this with my 6 yr old ink jet, but can figure it out on this machine.

Hello @buckinbevo
On the PC you can go to devices and printer then right click the picture of the printer and go to printer properties on the right side of the box that will open you can customize paper type and size and as well down bellow activate the duplex printing on documents when request
As far as scanning it depends because for instance on scan to network folder if you already set it up before clicking the final scan you can go to setting and select the option for source lets say you choose the ADF after you select that it will ask you if it will be a one side or two sided scan job and it will do it for you it applies the same for scan to email or scan to USB

thanks for the response...however, when i print off my phone it does an auto print on both sides. when i go on my laptop it forces a manual duplex copy...is there a way (i have surface pro 3) where I can turn on an auto duplex feature? thanks.

You may want to go as well to the finishin tab under printing preferences and make sure that print on both sides is selected
As well go to printer properties and then device settings and make sure that duplex unit shows as installed

I am having a similar problem. I cannot scan duplex from my iphone (only single sided), plus, what is more frustrating, is that I am unable to automatically duplex print (I get a manual option each tiime). I have searched for the settings you have described, but I cannot find them. I purchased this printer for duplex features. The scanner is amazing - it scans both sides in one sweep. Why was HP so short sighted by not adding auto duplex for printing to this 477?
Please confirm that auto duplex printing is an option on the m477fdw, because I can't find it.

Additional information: It appears there are conflicting properties for the printer. On one image, the MS Word print dialog provides an option to automatically duplex print, however when choosing this option, the printer prints single sided and you are prompted to move the paper to the tray. On the 477 Printer dialog, it only provides a Manual duplex option. So where is the automatic duplex option turned on??

Even after changing the settings on the Printer Properties dialog, the unit does not duplex automatically. I changed the Duplex Unit option to Installed and clicked OK (this removed the Manual print option from other print dialogs), but pages still come out single sided. If I click the Update Now button, the printer changes the duplex unit back to Not Installed. It appears I need to purchase a separate duplex component if I want this thing to duplex which is not the way it was advertised. Is there something wrong with this machine, or is this by design.
