HP Color Laserjet Pro MFP M277 dw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When printing with Application set to A4, Printer default & Tray 2 set to A4, Tray 2 has A4 in it, but it still requests Plain Letter (rarely used in UK).

It has been printing fine for years.

Now I cannot print without manually feeding A4 (even though it asks for "Plain Letter

Everywhere on the Printer (console), Printer Properties, and Application is set to A4 - Nowhere is set to Letter.

Two possible causes.

1. The document you are trying to print was formatted in letter size and your software is set to select paper size based on document settings.

2. The driver default is set to letter.

There should be a setting on the printer under trays to tell it to automatically substitute A4 for letter.

As stated initially, the document, application, printer (console), printer properties, tray paper, are ALL set to A4 - this is why I am asking the question as I cannot find anywhere else or any reason why it decides that it should be letter.

Thanks for the reply, but all this I have already done.

As you do not state the application, it is more difficult to provide details. I know that you stated that you had checked everything, but the most common problem we run into with this is when people are printing a PDF and it was formatted to a different paper size and the select source based on PDF will screw things up every time. If you post the application I might be able to provide a different answer. Sorry to waste your time if you have covered all these options already, but as stated, it is the one thing we run into with clients all the time.

It happens with all MS Office 365 Applications - Adobe Acrobat prints properly.

In Office 365, Document is set to A4, Printer Properties set to A4, Printer Console Default & Tray 2 set to A4, and there is A$ in Tray 2. Checking the print dialog in  Office it also says A4 before finally pressing print.

Printer then says Load Letter in Tray 1.

This only started happening recently, so possible MS Updates?

Thanks for fleshing out the details. Based on your last post I would suspect that you are correct that recent updates to office have issues or have created compatibility issues with the drivers you have currently installed. In our shoes I would try the HP UPD drivers to see if that resolves the problem. If you are already using  UPD drivers ensure they are the current 6.8 drivers.
