M254dw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Thanks in advance for any help you can give; if you're able to render any assistance you'll be doing 100% better than HP support.

I have brand-new M254dw that won't pick up an IP via DHCP for its wireless interface. When I assign a manual IP to the printer (manual IP addressing instead of DHCP) the printer doesn't communicate with anything else on the network. I took a packet capture from my AP and can plainly see the printer sending out a DHCP Discover packet and my router (DHCP server) sending back a DHCP Offer that I can also see is addressed to the correct MAC address. The printer, unfortunately, is not acting on the Offer as you can see from the capture:

Screenshot of the Discover and Offer

When configured for DHCP the printer picks up a 169.254.x.x address, thus indicating it can't talk to a DHCP server.

I can verify the printer is connected to my Access Point, otherwise I wouldn't be able to take this packet capture. Moreover I can see via my Access Point's web interface that the printer is properly connected to the AP, it just isn't getting an IP and once it gets one it won't talk to anything else on the network. Oddly enough my computer (connected via wired connection) detects the printer via HP's 123 setup application but it only says the printer is offline. My wife's laptop - via the same 123 application - can't find the printer at all, even by IP.

When connected via wired connection the printer has no problem getting an IP via DHCP.

No, this is not a problem with my Access Point. I have ten other devices all using DHCP via the Access Point without any issues. No, my DHCP pool is not exhausted. I even tried setting a DHCP reservation for the printer after it didn't work otherwise.

HP support was worthless. They tried to convince me that the printer was getting a "public IP address" and that because I had it connected to an access point that I was trying to connect it to public wifi despite me saying that the printer and all network equipment was within my own home. They also tried to get me to talk to my ISP for help with DHCP despite me saying that my ISP does not provide DHCP services. Support informed me that the printer would not work when connecting to an Access Point, that it must connect directly to my modem/router. Apparently they have never heard of an Access Point that's not integrated with a router.

I have a Meraki MX firewall/router and a Meraki MR18 AP. Any help would be greatly appreciated as support is absolutely, completely worthless. I think I have a pretty solid case that the issue here is with the printer, or at least with regard to how it talks to my Access Point. I have no problem with the idea that I may need to adjust settings on my Access Point in some manner but I don't know what setting might be problematic and it sounds like HP support doesn't understand the nature of the situation sufficiently to be of any help. Apparently their managers and higher-level support people (both of which I asked to be transferred to) are not available on weekends (which also must be false; I cannot believe there are no managers or leads present in the building on weekends) so at this point I have to wait until Monday to talk to someone who understands what I'm talking about.

TL;DR: Brand-new M254dw won't get an address via DHCP and when manually configured it won't talk to anything else on the network. All other wireless devices work just great in both regards. HP Support is completely worthless.

Update for everyone here: After getting nowhere with support I ended up returning the printer to the store and bought a different model HP (m477fdw). That one connected without issue to my wireless network and immediately picked up a proper IP address. Looks like it was a hardware issue.

hello hope you’re ok, I’ve also bought the m254dw and having lots of connection issues, are you using the m477fdw on a Mac operating system and so far, how good is the printer? Thanks
