I put all new color and black cartridges in this printer in November 2025 and all was working.

Now, when printing documents or photos from phone or computer, magenta is not laying down color.

I don't really want to have to spend money for another new cartridge, when this one still shows full!

If I run a Supplies Status report, Magenta prints a nice pink-tone color without any fading.

The orange bar is supposed to be very red.  From the top: Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple and Red.

Hi @nf14jk,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw not printing magenta in documents even though the supplies report prints correctly. Let’s go through a few checks.

Check Print Settings for Color Output

  • Open the document you want to print.
  • Select Print and open Printer Properties or Preferences.
  • Locate the Color or Color Options setting.
  • Ensure Print in Grayscale or Black & White is not enabled.
  • Select Color mode and print a test page.

Note: Some applications automatically switch to grayscale, which prevents color toner from printing.

Check Application Print Settings

  • Open the document from the program where it was created.
  • Select Print and open Advanced Settings.
  • Confirm Color Output is enabled.
  • Disable any Economy Color or Draft Mode option.
  • Print the document again.

Note: Certain programs store their own print settings separate from the printer driver.

Print an Internal Quality Report

  • On the printer control panel, open Setup or Reports.
  • Select Print Quality Report or Color Test Page.
  • Review the magenta block or gradient section.
  • Check for fading, streaks, or missing areas.
  • Confirm that magenta appears solid and consistent.

Note: If magenta prints correctly on internal reports, the cartridge and hardware are typically functioning normally.

Update or Reinstall the Printer Driver

  • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click the printer and select Remove device.
  • Restart the computer.
  • Download and install the latest driver for the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw from HP’s support site.
  • Add the printer again and print a color test document.

Check Toner Cartridge Seating

  • Turn the printer on and open the front door.
  • Remove the magenta toner cartridge.
  • Gently shake the cartridge side to side 4–5 times.
  • Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks into place.
  • Close the door and print a color document.

Note: Toner can settle inside the cartridge over time, which may affect color distribution in certain print jobs.

I hope this helps.
