LaserJet M750dn
macOS 10.12 Sierra

We are trying to troubleshoot a slow-printing M750dn printer connected to a Mac Pro. I contacted HP support, and their final answer was to put it on a network because their drivers in OS Yosemite are borked. We did this, and while it fixed SOME of the printing slowness, we're still having difficulty with large files. 

 

Specifics:

  • a 1.9MB image took an hour to print from the Preview application
  • a 9MB PDF took DAYS to print from Acrobat Reader

I work in a marketing department where we have large image files. Those two file sizes aren't very large, by our standards. Printing a PDF "as an image" is NOT an option, because the resulting quality is too poor for our purposes.

 

We did everything else in troublshooting steps and support that we found elsewhere:

  • reset the print queue,
  • updated the printer's firmware,
  • updated the Mac OS, 
  • checked for software updates (an did install one from HP), 
  • and even checked Gutenprint.

Does anyone have any other tips we can try? 

 

P.S. I would re-open the issue with HP, but my ticket is closed and I'm getting an infinite loop when I try to create a case with HP -- HP.com says it does not support enterprise equipment, but HP Enterprise says it does not support printers and I should use HP.com. Grr

Have you tried using another PDF program to print with? There was an issue with print files bloiwing up while in the print que- If you can on a MAC, watch the print file in the spooler and see if it grows in size while printing. 9MB is tiny- a large graphics base file size can be 300-500MB easliy for hi res color.

 

This is from Microsoft, but the settings may be something you can tinker with on a MAC

You could also try and tinker with some of the "duplex speed" settings- not like simplex duplex/ but in the network settings tab there should be a setting for "duplex speed" This is usually set to Auto- but you can try something like TX-100MB (for an internal network speed of 100MB) you may have a switch/router somewhere in the building that cant interpret the Auto speed command and is slowing the print job down. 

 

You may also try the post script UPD and see if that helps (again not a mac user- sorry)

I dont know why, but in a printer simillar happens in my company. I dont know why...

Solution:

 

Update the firmware and go quick again....

Thanks for the ideas. Unfortunately, on a Mac we can't install the UPD and select it when installing the printer. HP no longer provide drivers individually for Macs -- they send them to Apple, and they're supposed to be updated automatically with other Apple updates. We did get an HP Software update that way, which didn't solve the problem. 

 

I changed the network speed from Auto to TX-100MB. I'll check into the print spool, too, and report back after testing.

So far, printing seems to be working at acceptable speeds after changing the network speed setting from Auto to TX-100MB. If the problem recurs, I'll post again. 🙂
