HP LaserJet P1606dn
Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan

My HP LaserJet P1606dn was working perfectly for over a year until recently. Now when turned on the error message appears "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."

I am on a Mac running 10.11.16. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. So far I haven't found any solutions.

Hi @heyacm,

Welcome to the HP forums! It is a great way to engage, post questions and find resolutions by working with specialists in the HP community. I see by your post that when turning on the Mac you are getting the message "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". I can help you with this.

Something on the Mac is recognizing the printer as a disk drive. Since the printer has a feature called Smart Install, which only installs the printer software automatically on Windows.

Try disconnecting everything, do a complete shut down on the printer, restart the Mac, then connect the USB cable to the Mac while the printer is still off, then start the printer.

Do you have Parallels installed on the Mac?

Temporarily turn off the Parallels, so the Smart Install won't be recognized on the Mac.

If you don't have Parallels then we will need to disable the Smart Install in order to install the printer on the Mac.

There are a couple of ways that we can disable it.

Print out a configuration page. Printing a Configuration Page.

Select Method two.

If the printer has a IPV4 address or if the Wireless Direct is turned on and showing a IP address, you can access the printer's Embedded Web Server and disable the Smart Install from there.

If you have a valid IP address, type the IP into Safari's browser to bring up the printer's Embedded Web Server and you can disable the Smart Install on the printer.

If that doesn't work you will have to turn off the Smart Install on the printer on a Windows computer.

On the Windows computer, go to start, computer right clicks the CD for the printer
and left click open in new window, go to util/siutility.exe/HP Smart Install Utility/
printer or PC - select printer/click disable.

Alternatively, I would suggest you uninstall the drivers and then install the full feature software from the support website. Here is the link.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you require any further assistance.

This seems to resolve the issue only for a short time and then the issue begins to repeat itself over and over again on multiple machines and printers throughout my business.  Do you have a long term solution or work around?  This is beginning to get ridiculous.

So in our environment we are currently only using the printers over USB and get this error that way we do not want the printers to be hooked up over ethernet or wireless.

Hi @heyacm,

As I understand you are having trouble installing it using these steps. Let's try to install the inbuilt drivers from Apple website.

Let's try the steps here:

To install the HP driver through Apple Software Update, create a new print queue on the Mac.

  1. Click the Apple menu, then click System Preferences.

  2. Depending on your operating system version, click Print & Fax, Print & Scan, or Printers & Scanners.

  3. Check if the name of your printer displays in the Printers list. Do one of the following steps, depending on if the printer is listed or not.

  4. Click the Use or Print Using menu, then select the name of your printer.

  5. Click Add to add the printer to the list.

  6. Close the System Preferences window.

  7. Try to print, scan, or fax, depending on your printer functionality.

The device never shows up to be able to add it.  This is all that shows up when the printer is plugged in usb: (which is the only way we want to print)

We have 50-60 of these model printers throughout the district and need this issue resolved immediately.  We have tried the following:

Downloading and installing latest drivers from Apple.

Rebooting and restoring printer to factory setting. (Works temporalily but issues comes back within the day)

I know how to add a printer the issue is the printer does not even show to be add able on any of a Apple devices.
