Hello,

Can the print engine test be performed on a unit that is not booted?  For example at the service menu or while booting?

HP Recommended

Yes, sometimes it can. It can also sometimes be performed without a formatter board as well. Did you give it a go?

No response from the print when pressed at various points of the boot process.

These are sad news. If I had this printer in our workshop, I would firstly replace the formatter with a known well-working one. Failing that, the next steps would be the ICB and then the DC controller.

Before replacing anything, reseat all connections to the formatter, ICB and DC controller.

I hope this may help,

Cheers!

It's a long shot but defective embedded JetDirect can cause boot problems if you disable it does printer boot?

Service manual page 122: Select the Embedded Jetdirect Off item to disable the embedded HP Jetdirect.

So I brought the printer to a local printer repair shop.

They said that it needed a new HP hard drive.  It's unclear how they arrived to this conclusing.  Is this possible?  They said that I cannot substitute my own own hard drive, it needs to come from HP.

Thoughts?

You removed original printers hard drive and installed a random hard drive in the printer?

it is possible to use other hard drive but you need to upload printers firmware on it or it will not work.

Yes, I changed out the hard drive and I uploaded the firmware, but it would not boot.  (even less then now).

I think maybe there's some kind of formatting or initialization or encryption that needs to happen on the hard drive first.

Hi encoad,

You cannot use any HDD drive to replace the HP original HDD drive in a HP printer. It must be bought from HP and you have to buy the particular part number provided for your model by HP. The reason is that these HDD drives are encrypted for enhanced security, so that if someone removes them from a HP printer, he will not be able to read the information stored in it.

I hope this helps,

Cheers!

Thanks, that's very helpful.

How can I determine if this is the problem?  I certainly don't want to have a new expensive hard drive and a still broken printer if you know what I mean.
