I followed directions to find a built-in driver; my LaserJet 1020 could not be seen. I downloaded and ran the HP driver software; it still could not see the printer. I tried two different USB cables (which I know are good) and plugged into different USB ports. Nothing. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips! I understand you are having issues installing your HP LaserJet printer on your new Windows 10 PC. Don't worry we'll work together to help you find a solution.
Let's try clean installing the printer drivers. Here are the steps:
First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.
Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP LaserJet printer entries and uninstall them.
Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
Restart your computer.
Now click http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL51473/bi-124608-2/hp_LJ1020_Full_Solution-v2012_918_1_57... to download and install the software.
Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!
Eagerly waiting for your response!
I hope you have a good day ahead,
And Feel free to ask your queries as this forum has some of the best people in the world available and ready to help.

Hi Jeet,
Thanks for your reply. I'm trying to follow your instructions, but some of them aren't clear to me.
1. Even though I downloaded drivers from the HP site recently, nothing related to the LaserJet appears in "Programs and Features" in the Control Panel.
2. When you say to "Select all the printer entries and remove the device" in "Devices and Printers," do you mean that I should remove the LaserJet [which is not there] or that I should remove all entries [XPS Document Writer, Print to PDF, etc.]?
3. When I enter "c:/programdata" [without the quotation marks], it doesn't find anything. Inside the Program Files folder, there is an HP folder, inside of which is an HP LaserJet 1020 folder - is that folder what I should remove?
Thank you in advance for clarifying these issues.

Thank you for replying,
As I understand you have a concern regarding uninstalling the printer software. Don't worry I'll be glad to help you.
2. When you say to "Select all the printer entries and remove the device" in "Devices and Printers," do you mean that I should remove the LaserJet [which is not there] or that I should remove all entries [XPS Document Writer, Print to PDF, etc.]? Only delete the ones which are listed as HP Printer, rest please don't delete it.
3. When I enter "c:/programdata" [without the quotation marks], it doesn't find anything. Inside the Program Files folder, there is an HP folder, inside of which is an HP LaserJet 1020 folder - is that folder what I should remove?
Press the Windows key + R - Which opens the Run command - here type in c:/programdata and then click on OK. Over here go to Hewlett Packard and remove any printer related folders & files.
Please follow the steps suggested in previous post which should help you resolve this issue.

Jeet - I did everything you said to do. But when I am installing the software - after I have turned on the printer and connected it to the computer - a status box on the screen says "Waiting for you to connect the device." For some reason, the computer simply can't "see" the printer when it is connected.
I have tried to connect it with two different USB cables, both of which worked with my previous computer. I have also tried to connect it to multiple USB ports, which I know are active because I had my keyboard and mouse plugged into them, and those accessories worked just fine.
Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Hi Jeet,
I tried to do what you suggested. But when I clicked on "Show Options", it did not display a phone number. It said "Manufacturer warranty has expired", and the only option it gave me was the HP Support Forum (which I am obviously already using!).

No. The link is asking me to register a newer product than I have. My Laser Jet 1020 is probably 15-20 years old. It was working as well as the day I bought it. But the software just disappeared & all my attempts to reinstall have been unsuccessful. The HP Computer I bought last year..there was no problem installing the old printer and all was well until the printer disappeared.
