HP Color Laser Jet Pro CF394A
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When first installed it printed auto duplex. After updating driver Auto Duplex is no longer an option only choice is manual duplex or none. Very frustrating. We bought it because of auto duplex capability.

The 'automatic discovery' feature used by some drivers on installation (or update) doesn't always work; ensure that the driver knows that a duplex unit is present on the printer (assuming that one is present):

  • For the printer instance in question, bring up the Printer properties dialogue.
  • Select the Device settings tab.
  • Ensure that the duplex unit is set to Installed rather than Not installed.

You'll probably need to be logged in with administrator credentials in order to change the device settings.

Bingo!

Thank you Professor! That was the answer. I thought I had tried that before, but I was obviously in a different "settings" screen somewhere.

Professor - I tried your solution above however, when I click "printer properties" dialogue, there is no "device settings" tab.  How do I get this printer to automatically print on both sides ( currently, I have to open Tray 2 and manually insert the page in order to print the 2nd page/side)???  Please help

Update - I found the "Device Settings" tab and clicked "installed" under the Duplex Unit dropdown menu.  I clicked Apply and restarted the computer.  Now, the printer prints 2 sheets but still single sided (it is still not printing on both sides).

The Device Settings tab only tells the driver the capabilities of the device.

It does not set Duplex as the default setting - you still have to select duplex in the relevant Print dialogue - which may be a proprietary dialogue provided by an application like Word, or via the standard printer driver print dialogue.

I have a new M452nw and I have yet to see it auto duplex. How can I run a test a-d page?
