Oh my gosh!!!  Thank goodness for this discussion board.  I found hpiscnapp like you suggested and put it on my desktop and now I can scan perfectly!  Thanks so much. I am sooo glad I didn't have to call Tech Support.  Anyone else having the problem with this scanner try this. It works!!

I have 5 computers in the house all wireless and the 6500 E709n wireless printer. This setup worked flawlessly from Windows Vista (both printer and scanner).

It was the in-place upgrade to Windows 7 that broke the installation. hpiscnapp, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat Pro all reported that no scanner was found on the system, even though the printer worked from all systems.

The HPSDU.exe scanner diagnostic downloaded from HP told me that no scanner existed as well.

So I downloaded the full install, and when executed the first thing it told me was that the software on the system was old.

As I write this the software has finished installing and I need to reboot, so hopefully this will bring it back to the working Vista state. If not, I also have downloaded the OfficeJet scrubber utitlity which will remove all trace of the software and I'll try again.

I'll report back here if the re-install did not work. Otherwise assume it did, and it's something to try. Get newer software.

** Since I can edit my reply, I can confirm that this worked. Setup: everything is wireless, no LAN connections necessary. hpiscnapp even has a completely new splash screen indicating it is a newer version. Printer and scanner both work flawlessly from other programs like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat Pro and Picasa 3.

Hi ... I really think this problem relates to ones virus protection/firewall. I used the scanning on this printer with success when I had AVG (Free Version) as VP ... unfortunately AVG was not good enough in the environment I am working (well not the free addition anyway) and someone suggested "BitDefender" which I then bought and installed. Seems like BitDefender is so effective it actually also kills stuff you want to use ... I disabled the firewall already but with no results ... and it only prints when I have BitDefender set in "gaming" mode. I am not to clever on firewalls and stuff ... pitty stupid people like me cant just buy things plug it in and switch it on and it works ... guess its to give IT wizzes work ... good luck

I with ya on this opinion also. I will NEVER buy another HP printer/scanner. I am constantly having problems with printing and I am lucky if I can scan. This HP Officejet 6500 Wireless All-in-One Printer is a pile of **bleep**.

I am having similar problems with my HP officejet 6500A working great except for scanning.  I also have been on with support for hours on numerous occasions and tried lots of different fixes.  I thought the problem was finally fixed and happened again - when I go to scan from the printer it gives a message that no computer is detected.  Tonight when I called the tech support person had me go to my printer on the computer (through devices and printers) and go to 'Scanner Actions' and then to 'Activate Scan to Computer' and the I activated it.  It worked.  I have recreated this numerous times tonight - I go to scan, it says it can't find the computer, and I go through the steps again and it works.

So, my question is - why is this happening?  Why would I have to reactive the computer?  What would be causing it to not find the computer? It is frustrating to have a wireless printer if I have to carry my laptop to the printer everytime I want to scan from the printer.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Bessie

When is HP going to resolve this problem - or are they even trying?

If there is a reasonable time frame in which to expect a repair patch or something, I will remain patient.

If not, I cannot wait longer and will go out and buy another product instead.

What is this hpiscnapp?  When I google it, I can't find anything newer than 2009, and most of what I find is how to delete it as it says it is spyware.

What is the site to download this that is not a spyware?

Read the reviews and just bought my 6500 (wired, not the 6500A wireless, because I liked the white & black shell of the 6500 better than the solid black of the 6500A). Running Max OS X 10.6.5 and everything worked great right out of the box, except the SCAN button on the control panel. I've had an HP 7210 All-in-One for a few years and the Scan To button on it has worked great for me, scanning to files on my Mac without a hitch. Not so with the 6500...

Literally just bought the 6500 last night, 12-15-2010, noticed the scanning issue right away since that is a feature I use a lot, and found this forum immediately.

Based on what you all have posted so far, I did some exploring, found pretty much the same problems as everyone else, but the thing about putting an icon on your desktop for the Windows users drove me keep at it, and I found a Mac solution. Here it is:

If you go to your "Applications" folder and open the "Hewlett Packard" folder, you will find a bunch of programs that will tell you that a scanner can't be found, but one program (at least for me) ALWAYS finds the scanner -- "HP Scan". (HP Scan Pro does NOT, however find a scanner.)

The "HP Scan" program works great, every time (again, for me anyway).

So, I've put the HP Scan program in my dock, and whenever I need to scan, I just click on it an my scan goes forward smoothlessly!

Obviously, HP has an issue here, but it isn't with the printer, but with their software suite.

The developers for the HP Scan program got it right. The other printer developers at HP ought to take an hour to consult with them and fix this long-term problem.

When I want to scan some papers, I got this message:
