HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color M451dn
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I have moved the printer to another desktop computer and intalled the windows driver "HP LaserJet 400 M401 PCL6 Class Driver"

New Desktop PC has Windows 8.1 Installed

It is connected via USB cable

When I plug it into the Desktop in the Devices window it shows up as  Unspecified "HP LaserJet 3020"

I have downloaded the firmware from HP

Turned the power off on the printer, launch the firmware updater, power printer on, existing error message comes up on LCD panel, then downloading for a few seconds, then erasing and it never gets past that point no matter how long you leave it.

Tried it multiple times with same result.

Any ideas out there on something else I can try or maybe the part that needs to be replaced??

Firmware Corrupt Ready 2 Download often means that the formatter has a problem and needed to be replaced.

What you can do is trying to re-send firmware through USB and hope it can be rescured.

If it still doesn't work then the formatter needed to be replaced.

To re-send firmware you need to have the driver installed first and must be thriugh USB port.

If you have a net driver already then go into the driver's -> right click mouse -> printer property  -> connected port -> change from IP to USB.

If thers are more than one USB-001 002 003.....,try every one of them to see which one is the real one connected to M401.

Always choose the one that has not been occupied first to save your trying time.

If you choose the right one you'll see the light flash and processing procedure going on the LED screen.

If you did see that then you probly may have been succeeded.

Hope it helps.

Checked the printer port it is associated with and it is set to the only USB port setting.

Tried to flash it again and it starts the process, the orange caution light turns on and it shows downloading, then erasing and get stuck there, it will not go behond that point, I left it in that state over night last night and when I came into work this morning it was still in the erasing mode.

The "formatter", is it a replaceable part on this LaserJet model???

I guess I need to go to hp parts and start searching for the part.

I  have been run into the same situation as you did.

Did you ever try to on/off in such sitution?  I think you have done it.

Sometimes it works.

Will you try to bake the formatter in the oven?

Nothing lose.

check YouTube

I myself did it many time for many different model of printer, some worked and some didn't.

Of course you can buy a used formatter from eBay and replace it all by yourself.

It should be easy.

Ok, I baked the formatter board in the oven last night @400 degrees for 5 minutes.  Brought it to work and installed it back into the printer and guess what.

It fixed the issue, Printer boots all the way up and is working.

Thanks for all the help.

Are you serious about baking in oven?

It's not a joke. It really works. And what lose to you it just bake in the oven.

It will last for a couple of time and one day it will fail again and you need to bake it again.

Until one day it won't work anymore.
