The paper tray won't close.
I opened it, changed paper (same size 8.5x11), pushed in tray and it was blocked from closing.
The paper is also loose in the tray, which it never was before.
Nothing else was touched or changed on the printer.

Most likely you have accidently set the tray to legal size. There is a blue lever on the tray near the outside edge that you press and then shrink the tray to letter size.

Thanks. I had also found that solution, but appreciate your reply.
I had never used any other paper except letter size, so it didn't at first occur to me that the tray had been changed inadvertently to legal.
Now I have another issue .. I'm getting a message that the printer is out of paper, which it is not. !!!

Make sure that the paper lift flap in the tray moves smoothly.
