My Apple Mac OS is 10-12-6 (not listed).

Printer: Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw

The pictures it prints are far too dark.  How can I make them brighter and/or lighter?

Reset the printer to the defaults.  Then print a test page from the control panel of the printer with no PC's connected.  This will confirm the default state of your printer. 

 

If the defect is visible after the reset then you have a physical issue with either the cartridges (most likely) or the printer assembly.
