after you comments i decided to try to get some kind of technical support. After several phone calls i finally got to a tech rep for HP who helped me download the universal driver which seems to have corrected the problem.
Printing like a race horse,
Thanks

Then perhaps either:
- Current driver is generating "inefficient" print language "commands", compared with the previous version (perhaps a change due to a Windows update?) of the driver.
- Interference/corruption on the connection (USB or Ethernet or Wireless?) causing multiple 'retransmissions'?
.... and what about the speed of printing of multiple -page NotePad documents?

While waiting i figured out how to print from notepad. It printed just fine, one page after another, no pause.
I should say most of what i print are pdf files, containing approx. 20-60 pages of printed music. I have been doing this type of printing since i bought the printer and it always printed page after page with no hesitation. Only recently did the pause start.

So the NotePad test seems to confirm that the printer and the connection are fine.
So either the application/driver on the workstation has problems, or the printer is having problems processing the incoming print "commands" fast enough to keep up with the mechanical print engine.
For PDF documents, the most appropriate printer driver is a Postscript one (PDF and PostScript both came from Adobe, and have similar internals).
So if you are using a PCL 5 or PCL 6 (PCL XL) driver, try the PostScript one instead.
