Bingo. Sunday24/02/2013
However , what I did do , as the machine & print was on -> Was switch off the printer
Then immediately do the sequence as suggested by 'Collaborate.' Sure enough the
machine was set on 'manual' in the services, and after changing to automatic. I tried
to print , it worked immediately.
Thank you.
My final query is - What could have buggered the spooler file up . I do tend to use
some of these systems that clean up your computer and suspect that had caused it.
Anyway I've saved this remedy onto my desktop - just in case the blighter plays up
again.
What does annoy me, is the number of sites which give the indication, that their
software can solve this & other problems for free. You waste time downloading
the stuff only to discover , to sortout the hundreds of problems, YOUR machine
NOW has! Certainly seemed to run OK , other than the printer!!
Their software package - Will cost you big bucks.
The usual additional annoyance is - Buy it today and you can save half the mega
bucks. And all this time they are leading you to think they are acting for the
big machine manufacturers.
My policy is now, just to delete the stuff - I want companies to be upfront -
Whats wrong with - Head lines
'We'll solve your problem. Our fee is half price ! Successful outcome guarranteed.'
Certainly in my view, these companies would then waste less customers time also
gain a reputation for straight dealings. As it is one must assume that the majority
of computer users reckon the switch selling will come in, hence approach the project
with suspicion , certainly not with a good customer / seller feeling.

Sam:
You need to be blaming HP for their crappy printer software. I am not aware of any software "repair" utilities that can fix this print spooler issue. Do some research on the utilities and their performance before trying them, and especially before buying them. CNET is a good source of reviews on utilities.
All that being said, the "work around" that I wrote up some time ago (over a year) will work, although sometimes it takes a minute or two to affect a "repair". Or reboot your computer.
If you have the option, refuse to buy HP product again! That is my ultimate solution!

Under Administrative Tools, click on Services. Then scroll through the list of services to find "Print Spooler". Right click on Print Spooler, then click on Properties.
Once you get to properties, you can make the system changes that I suggested in my March 2012 posting. These are:
Set Start-up Type to Automatic under the General tab.
Go to the Recovery tab and set First, Second and Subsequent failures to "Restart the Service".
Hope this helps.

Hi funnycat. Are you running Windows 7? If so, carefully read and follow the suggestions on my 03-09-13 posting. You may have to log into the computer as the Administrator in order to see Services and Print Spooler. It is always available on my computer - sometimes I just have to search for it.
I have been using this fix on the same computer-printer setup for over 2 years now. It works! Occasionally if I leave my computer running for a long time (more than one day), the print spooler may go down. But after a minute or two it will come back because the Service has been set to continually "restart".
If you are uncomfortable "messing around" with the Control Panel and Administrative Services, get a computer geek friend to help out. Hope this helps. Good luck.
