HP Laserjet Pro 200 M251NW
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello!

Our Laserjet Pro 200 has operated without issue for years, and then suddenly it no longer worked.  I tried to remove the printer from our machines and add it again, but now it will not show up as a device to add.  I tried to restore the printer to factory settings, and for a while it would not reconnect to the network even though I knew the credentials were correct.  After some work, I was able to get it to connect back to the network.

At this time, it's connected to the same wireless network as my computers.  I have tried the following:

  • Reset printer to factory to clear out any possible network issues
  • Downloaded newest drivers and software, resinstalled on machines, and tried to connect to the printer with no success (states that the printer did not respond after trying for some time.)
    • Have tried to connect physically via USB, and via network connection.  Both printer and computer verified to be on the same network.
    • When tryig to connect wirelessly, I have tried the "find automatic" option, as well as IP address, host name and hardware address with no success.
  • Reset router to clear any possible network issues caused by the router
  • Downloaded Print and Scan Doctor, which does not recognize the printer as an available device either

If it helps, the machines I am trying to connect are an HP Pavilion x360 2 in 1, and an ASUS ROG G751JT.

Looking for any help or possible solutions that can be given.  The printer is needed for work items and I would rather not have to purchase a new one.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the HP Forums. I would be happy to help you with your HP Laserjet Pro 200 Printer. I understand that your printer is not found during the network setup and you have already done some preliminary troubleshooting.

Don't worry though as I have a few steps to determine the issue and find a solution as well.

Uninstall the HP driver and software.

  1. If your printer connects to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.

  2. Search Windows for programs and features, then click Programs and Features in the list of results.

  3. In the list of installed programs, click your HP printer name, then click Uninstall or Yes.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.

  5. Restart the computer.

Reinstall the HP software.

  1. Turn on the printer.

  2. If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.

  3. Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads.

  4. If prompted, select a method to identify your printer model, and then follow the on-screen instructions to go to the download page.

  5. Click Download next to the full feature driver (recommended), or click Basic Drivers for other driver options.

Click here and refer the document for more assistance.

Let me know if that helps.

Cheers.

Hi,

Re installing the software is a waste of time, the printer should be detected regardless if the software is not installed.

What type of router are you using?

Hello - my printer is connected to the wifi wireless network. It will print when I unplug the router and printer to reset, but only for the first few minutes.   Then it becomes "undetectable" .   I'm trying to update the software, however despite the computer being connected to the wifi, the computer cannot "find" it.  The computer is not new. It has been working correctly for several years. I'm at a loss!

@jill3331, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

  • Make sure the printer and the PC are connected to the same wireless network. Either 2.4GHz or 5GHz.
  • If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both the networks.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and fix any driver issue

Click here to download the file. Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and click on 'Fix printing'.

If the issue persists, proceed to the next step.

Check the connectivity between the printer and the PC

  1. Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to obtain the IP address.
  2. Type the IP address at the top of your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
  3. If you get any security notification, click on show details/advanced and 'proceed to this website'.
  4. Go to tools > print a test page.

Let me know how this goes.

thanks much for the detailed response. As curiously as the problem arose, it resolved over the past 24hr hours. Nothing else has changed.  I've saved your response for future reference. I'm jaded enough not to believe that its corrected for good.

I wanted to followup. The printer stopped working again.

I started working thru your suggested steps and everything corrected when I ensured than my dual band router had different names. Thanks so much !
