Windows 7 Pro 64 bit on HP laptop
I installed an HP CP1215 printer. Printer shows as active under Devices and Printers.
Driver listed as: HP Color LaserJet CP1215
Port is USB006 Virtual port for USB
Would not print, leading to:
Deleted existing files in the print spooler (C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS). Stopped then restarted the print spooler.
On selecting to print, the printer alerts me it will soon be time to replace cartriges in xx number of pages. So there is some communication with the printer.
On commanding to print (Notepad, various Office files), I can see the file briefly in the Status as "spooling", then "printing". Looking at file manager during this, the files appear and autodelete in the print spooler location (C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS). But nothing prints. Normally the green status light on the printer starts blinking when it normally prints, but in this case the light stays steady green, as if it simply is not receiving anything.
Have tried with "Enable bidirectional printing" checked and unchecked. Same for "Enable printer pooling", and "print directly to the printer." And mimicked various settings that worked on the other HP printer.
The laptop prints normally to other printers via USB, including another HP printer, all using Virtual Port for USB, but with each printer having its own port number. Other laptops can print to the CP1215 printer normally. Have uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, rebooted etc. Same result: spools, but does not print.

The only way to recover from this state is to do a System Restore .
