Hello,
Deskjet 6980 is a generic driver.
Since it is not working .. you may download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor from www.hp.com/go/tools
Let me know the result of running the Print and Scan Doctor.

I ran the Print & Scan Doctor for the networked OfficeJet Pro 8610 . Everything appears with a green checkmark like there are no issues. When I tried priting the test page, no page came out. The program then advised an internal test page, which did preint correctly. The program then says there is an issue that the tool cannot fix and recommends uninstalling and reinstalling the software, which I have done close to half a dozen times at this point. When I ran it for the local version of the 8610 you had me install on the virtual USB port, I am getting an error that says the printer is not connected; same deal for the 6980.

I am having the same problem. In addition to all of the suggestions above, I also tried creating a generic TCP/IP port and using that. It seemed liked it worked at first, but then stopped again. No printing involving the spooler seems to work, such as Print Test Page from Printer Properties or any application. However, the 8600 will print a Printer Diagnostic Page from HP Print and Scan Doctor, as this seems to be sent directly to the printer.
Like the forum members with this problem, there are other computers on my LAN that print to the 8600 without trouble. But this seems to be a problem with the 64-bit Windows 7 driver. Even our 64-bit Vista laptop works.
This is very exasperating. As the driver comes from HP, I would tend to lay the blame on them . On the other hand, Microsoft isn't perfect, either. But surely HP must have QA'ed this configuration before they shipped it -- not so?

On network printing, I running a cable. wireless is unreliable. Also in windows 10 it needs to be a private network, with all swoftware firewalls disabled. None of those software firewalls protect your computer and are completely useless on a network that already and a firewall. On my wireless laptop, if I didn't do this windows 10 selects the WSD port which does not always work. Disabling all software firewalls in windows 10 was the only way to make the windows 10 computers print reliably. I also removed all virus scanning software and disabled the window's protector (another useless piece of software)
This is an office enviroment, and had to configure this way. Internet is restricted to the linux computers and Ubuntu 16.04lts does not have issues at all with the HP M426 monochrome and HP m477 color printers.
My office is slowly migrading to linux since it is the most stable, malware proof and doesn't waste productivity time upgrading itself.
