Deskjet 6540
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Printer dies after printing a total of 5 pages (seems to keep count over multiple jobs). The error lights indicate a problem with the tri-color ink cartridge but there is no visible problem with the cartridge.

Removed the cartridge and reinstalled it and recycled the printer off/on.  Same problem. Ran the HP Print and Scan Doctor. It said it fixed the software. Tried printing test page. Nothing printed.  Kept rerunning the Print Doctor (for ~15 minutes) and finally test page printed fine (including colors). Tried printing regular document.  5 pages printed then the color cartridge error light came on again. Another 15 minutes or so of running the Print Doctor and finally the test page printed again. Note: did NOTHING with the color print cartridge between attempts. Attempted to print 6 copies serially of a single page. Yup, 5 copies printed and it would not print the sixth.

This looks to me like a driver/software issue.  Tried uninstalling & reinstalling the driver (Windows 10 keeps reinstalling the same driver each time). Tried print test -- same results.

Is this a new "feature" of the driver software?

Hello, @drbobski - Hope you are well 🙂

Thanks for your continued participation on the HP Forums! I’d like to be of your assistance!

Going through your post, I understand that you are having issues while printing with your Deskjet printer. Let’s try to completely uninstall the printer as suggested below:

  • First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.
  • Go to Control Panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control Panel – Devices and Printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
  • Restart your computer.

Now, connect the USB cable from the printer to the PC and wait for 2-3 minutes while the Windows install the printer. You can follow the steps 3 here to install the printer manually: http://hp.care/2nxKJv8

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Good luck 🙂
