I  cannot get my printer to print on half letter-size paper for a small three-ring binder.  When I gave up and decided to print on a letter-size and cut it in half, I cannot get it aligned; it's print off the page on one side. I'm also confused about Tray 1 and Tray 2, if someone could explain that.  Thanks.

Welcome back to HP Forums

I have gone through your Post and I would like to help

Please ensure your Mac has all the latest updates. Please refer to this Link: https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT201541

Also ensure your Printer has the latest Firmware. Click this Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c02919168

I suggest you try the Custom paper Size printing to print on half letter size papers

Please follow the instructions in this Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03890386

Tray 1 is for single sheet priority printing. Means you can load one paper at a time. Tray 2 is where you store the papers. Please refer to page 16 - 25 in this User Guide: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04474163 to know more about the usage of Tray 1 & 2

Hope this helps

Keep me posted how it goes

Thank you and have a wonderful weekend 😊

Thank you for your suggestions.  I have a recent upgrade to the operating system of my MacBook (can't remember which); don't know if the Firmware is updated, but have problems trying to update it; and have tried using the custom setting to set the paper size to half sheets.  I have figured out the paper trays and had to use Tray 1 to print a calendar I created in a half-sheet (slow going).  Since then, I reset my printer's settings to the letter size paper in Tray 2, which I had also tried for half sheets, but the printer is not resetting.  I'll work on that tomorrow.  As for half sheets,  the trays can be set for that size, as far as I can tell, but there is no mention of half-sheets when I read the guide about printing.  I cannot imagine HP creating a printer like this one, with so many uses, without letting me set the size to half sheets.

It looks like you were interacting with @KrazyToad, but he is out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out.

Half letter size paper is 5.5 x 8.5, as per the paper handling specifications available here, 5.5 x 8.5 is not a supported paper size. However, you can create a custom paper size and print on a 5.5 x 8.5 paper.

Thanks to all who responded and made suggestions.  My system and firmware are up to date.  I worked on things again yesterday and finally got the printer to print half sheets.  I think I must have not fully understood that I need to set/select the tray for special jobs and then change it back.  At any rate, it's working well last I checked, an I printed a couple of test sheets.  Thanks again to every who helped.
