I have a genuine HP color and black ink and I have the same problem.   I've leaned the bottom wher the ink comes out of and wiped the other side as well.  I am wondering if it is the printer itself.

Hello, @msorgen3 - Greetings!

Thanks for reaching out! I'd like to help with the printer issue 🙂

Going through your post, I see that you are having issues with the Officejet 4500 printer cartridge. Are you facing the issue with the black or the color cartridge?

I'd suggest you try the steps listed here to try and fix the issue: http://hp.care/2qK5fJZ

If the issue persists, remove the problem cartridge, and then print with the remaining cartridge. If you remove the tri-color cartridge, the printouts are in grayscale. If you remove the black cartridge, the printer prints slowly and the colors in the printouts might differ.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Good luck 🙂

The color and the black ink both give me problems. I followed the step by step instructions, cleaned the heads and he inside metals but it did not resolve the problem. As soon as I put both cartridges in, the message appeared again.  I do not use non-HP ink.

Hello, @msorgen3

Do you have an alternate cartridge to test with?

It looks like an issue with the cartridges. Please try and use an alternate cartridge and try printing.

Let me know if that helps!

Cheers 🙂

I have one HP 901 color, 1 HP901xl black and 1 HP901 black.

All 3 reacted the same way.  I get the same message "print cartridge problem".  I installed the color with the 901xl and got the message then I tried the color with the 901.  I went to Staples and bought another 901 color.   I thought it was the built in metal contacts and cleaned them as instructed.  I believe it's the printer itself and am wondering if there is some way I can turn off the messages.

I gave you a thumbs up for trying to resolve my problem.  But you haven't resolved it yet.  I asked if there was a way I can have the printer ignore the error message and just let it print.

Thanks for the reply.

I made a research on this.
There is no option to ignore that message and print.
But HP Phone support might have multiple options to assist you.

Cheers.
