I have the same problem on an MFP M281fdw. I went through similar resets and firmware updates.

Hi @jguthy

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that you are facing issues with HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw. There are several possible reasons why Web Services may not be working. Network connectivity issues, such as incorrect DNS settings or an improper IP configuration, can prevent the printer from connecting to Web Services.

Use Static IP and DNS Settings

  • Access the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS) via its IP address.
  • Set a static IP address on the printer:
  • Navigate to EWS > Network/Networking tab.
  • Enter a static IP address for the printer

Configure DNS servers:

  • Often Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1) or Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) can help improve connectivity.
  • Go to DNS settings and manually assign the DNS server addresses.

Enable Web Services Again

  • Open the EWS and navigate to the Web Services tab. Click "Enable" or "Continue" to attempt to activate Web Services.
  • To enable Web Services on an HP printer, access the Web ServicesNetwork Setup, or Wireless Settings menu on the printer's display panel, select "Enable" or "Set Up," and follow the prompts to accept terms and print an information page. Alternatively, use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) by entering the printer's IP address into a web browser, clicking the Web Services tab, and selecting Enable

Update Printer Firmware

  • Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date:
    • For network printers, you can often update directly from the control panel under Setup > Printer Maintenance.

Check Proxy Settings

  • Update Web Services proxy settings in the EWS if your network uses a proxy server.

I Hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
