I am having the same problem printing to my laserjet p1006, connected via usb to my pixelbook. It identifies the printer in the HP Print for Chrome app, but tells me the driver is incorrect. When I select it to print, it fails to load the preview. Looking for guidance.

I had installed HP Print for Chrome, and it identified the printer, but did not print. As noted in my question, It identifies the printer in the HP Print for Chrome app, but tells me the driver is incorrect. When I select it to print, it fails to load the preview. "
Similarly, HP Print for Chrome did not work with my Officejet 4500 when connected via ethernet, but that did work from USB.
Ultimately, I was able to use the Android Cloud print to share the printer, but that requires a computer online to work.

I tried that too. No luck. I also tried this with my Officejet 4500, connected to the network via ethernet, and with the HP Chromebook app, without success.
But the HP worked via USB, I think without the HP chromebook app.
The chromebook app successfully identified the P1006, but when I tried to print, it reported a compatibility error.
