HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I purchased toner cartridges.  Although everything on the boxes indicate they are for North America, I receive an Incompatible error message.  Did all the recommended and logical fixes I could find, to no avail.  I scanned the HP Sticker to confirm they are NOT counterfeit.  Only other option I can find is to do a Regionalization Reset which requires assistance from HP which is a hassel.  Does anyone havs another option?

First verify that your printer is really North America.  If you bought online or used possibly the printer was either designed for or simply used in a different region.

Possibly it is not a region problem as there are a number of explanations for "incompatible cartridges"

These laserjets can use any type of toner, but once the firmware has been updated they only accept HP toners. Either new or refilled as long as the toner has an HP chip in it. HP is not the only company that wants their own ink used. The last time I checked, Epson, Canon and Brother all do the same.
This video shows how to determine if your LaserJet toner is genuine.

Changing the region code can be difficult as described here.

When an agent contacts you ensure that the agent is familiar with the OS you are using. If the agent is in a different time zone try to get one in your time zone. If that is not possible you may need to choose the best time to make a contact.

I read that only 3 or 4 region changes are allowed. It depends on which AI bot I ask.

You may need WhatsApp to work through the region reset procedure.

1. The printer should be connected using a printer USB cable to the computer.
2. You need to have the printer full feature software installed on your computer.
3. You need to have all the cartridges either from the region/country from where the printer was purchased originally or the new region/country to which you want to reset it to.
4. The cartridges must be genuine HP.
5. Make sure HP Smart App is installed.
6. If the printer is not under warranty, then the ink cartridges need to be in the warranty period.

Hi @EZAlaska,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for reaching out. I understand how frustrating it can be to install new toner cartridges that appear to be correct for your printer and region, only to receive an incompatibility message.

To help us better understand the situation, could you please provide the exact wording of the error message displayed on the printer or in HP Smart? A photo of the message would be helpful as well, if possible.

Additionally, have you ever performed a regionalization reset or changed the printer's region in the past? In many cases, an "Incompatible Supplies" error can occur if the printer is configured for a different region than the cartridges, even when the cartridges themselves are genuine and intended for North America.

Please also let us know:

  • Which toner cartridge(s) are being reported as incompatible (Black, Cyan, Magenta, or Yellow)?
  • Are these genuine HP cartridges or HP EvoMore cartridges?
  • Did the previous cartridges work normally in this printer?
  • Is this the first time you have replaced the toner since owning the printer?

Once we have the exact error details and a little more information about the printer's history, we can check whether this is a regionalization issue or if there may be another cause and guide you toward the best resolution.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Printer was purchased in Alaska which is the 49th State of the United States America. Printer and toners are North America. All toner cartridges state they are for North America on the boxes. All four toner cartridges receive the Incompatible Message when inserted. I have purchased and changed all toners one time (each) since I purchased the printer new. Even though the HP QR Code, when scanned, states they are genuine, I don't believe they are.  Perhaps they were not boxed and sealed properly?

I have seen non genuine (fake) ink cartridges being offered on ebay.   I have not seen similar toners being offered but I assume they could be some.  Non genuine ink worked until a few years ago when HP updated printer firmware.

If you have genuine toners there is a problem with the printer recognizing them.   The previous post I made provided info  for cartridges, not toners but still applies.

This is what AI reports:  To quickly resolve HP toner and cartridge errors, power cycle the printer by unplugging it for 60 seconds. Next, remove the toner cartridge and use a dry, lint-free cloth to gently wipe the golden electrical contacts on the cartridge and the matching pins inside the printer.

If the above does not work then see if you can get detailed error information such as error codes.  What does a status report show?  If you cannot print the status report then use the EWS tool to get error information

This explains how to Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)
