Laserjet M277dw
macOS 10.14 Mojave

I have owned an HP Laserjet M277dw for a couple of years and, until recently, it didn't ask for a password for WIFI Direct printing. However, I had to reset my internet connection and when I next started up my print, it began asking for a password to connect to WIFI Direct. I've tried everything to remove the password but there doesn't seem to be an obvious way.

Can anyone tell me how to do this since it wasn't a problem before?

WiFi Direct is the name of the feature for the WiFi service broadcasting directly from your printer.

WiFi Direct is seperate from your home wireless network and is intended for mobile devices like phones and tablets.  This feature allows you to direct connect to the printer via WiFi without gaining access to the primary home network.  Such a feature can be handy if you are running a business or hosting guests in your home without a dedicated guest network.

The WiFi Direct feature can be disabled on the control panel of the printer if you have no need for it.  There should be a WiFi Icon on the home screen of the control panel.  Tap the icon to turn the feature off or display what the current WiFi Direct password is.  Once move your PC over to the normal home WiFi network you shouldnt be prompted for the password in order to print anymore.

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply. I don't have my home wireless network password protected as I live remotely and don't want the hassle of giving visitors and other family a password.

I had WIFI Direct enabled on the printer from the start and, although most of my printing was from my laptop, it worked better than using my wireless network connection so this is why I want it enabled - but I don't want a password, and didn't have one before. I can access the WIFI Direct password from the printer's touch panel but I can't find a way to remove it altogether.

Disbling the WiFi Direct network is more dificult that it seems but several posters mention work arounds that may work for you.

Thanks John. The issues in the other topic weren't really the same problem. I did manage to find the printer's IP address and tried changing it online but even there the WIFI Direct option insisted you put in a password of at least eight characters. I can't understand why it didn't require it until now when all that changed was the home wifi connection being reset.

So it looks like I'll just have to put up with having a password to use  the WIFI Direct facility.

Thanks for your help anyway.
