This is a Samsung printer, but, as you know, HP have bought that arm of their business.

For years it has worked OK. I have changed its toner cartridges and it has continued to work. A day, or two ago, before the current one actually ran out, it started saying "Install Toner Cartridge" (as opposed to something about there not being a lot of toner left). So I changed the current cartridge for a new one. OK it is not a kosher one, but don't the anti-monopoly laws say that HP, or anyone else, may not stop me from doing this?

Anyway, given the way it has suddenly changed its 'mind' about the existing cartridge, as well as an identical replacement, I'm hardly going to spend another $150 just to find that the printer has pegged-it.

Has anyone any suggestions?

Thanks.

P.S. anyone else unimpressed by the support options available?

I will try and assist.Sometimes the counter does not reset on the cartridge replacement.Try to put the old cartridge back into the machine and do a print. Then give the new cartridge a few shakes left to right to charge the toner.Put the new cartridge into the machine and retry.Hope this will help.

Thank you for this. It inspired me to take a closer look at the different error messages that I was getting from the machine when I had put in the different cartridges.

The error message with the older (working) cartridge is "Replace Toner", whereas the new one caused the "Install ..." message..  A closer look at the two cartridges tells me that they are not identical (as I had thought / intended). One is called MLT-101 (the wprking one) and the other s-mlt101. The only difference that I can spot is the PCB connecters at the end look a bit different.

So, it looks as if it _is_ my fault. I will have to check the order and hope that the suppliers sent the wong one.

Thanks again,
