HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw
macOS 26.0 Tahoe

A couple years ago I bought a Color Laser Jet Printer M283hdw for my Windows computer.  I recently moved to a new Mac computer and connected the printer to it. The printing and copying function fine, but the scanner does not. It won't start at all. I tried the scanning function in the HP App for Mac, but the sheet feeder does't work at all and it only slowly scans one sheet at a time.   Any solutions?

Hi @Janich3,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP Color LaserJet M283hdw printer doesn't work with your new Mac Computer.

Solutions to Try

Enable “Scan to Computer” in HP App:

Open the HP app → select your printer → go to Printer Settings.

Look for Scan to Computer (sometimes called Enable Scan to PC) and turn it on.

Then, on the printer’s touchscreen, choose Scan → Scan to Computer and select your Mac.

HP App – For HP Printers, Laptops, and Tech Accessories | HP® Official Site

Use AirPrint scanning (Preview or Image Capture)

On your Mac, open Preview → File → Import from Scanner.

Or open Image Capture (built into macOS).

Select your HP printer and scan directly — this bypasses the HP Smart app.

Firmware update on the printer

On the printer: Setup → Printer Maintenance → Update Printer.

HP has released firmware updates to improve macOS scanning compatibility.

Try Ethernet or USB connection

Some users report that scanning works better when the printer is connected via Ethernet or USB instead of Wi‑Fi.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.
