I just installed a new 78A print cartridge and its hardly printing but printing smudges repeatly on the page.  The results are totally useless.  I hope someone can help me.  It's the first time I've run into this issue.

@SunshineFL, Welcome to HP Support Community!

During the printing process, paper, toner, and dust particles can accumulate inside the product and can cause print quality issues such as toner specks or spatter, smears, streaks, lines or repeating marks. Follow these steps to clean the product’s paper path.

  1. On the product control panel, press the Setup button ( ).

  2. Press the Down Arrow button ( ) to highlight Service, and then press OK.

  3. Press the Down Arrow button ( ) to highlight Cleaning Page, and then press OK.

  4. When prompted, load copier-grade paper (not bond, heavy, or rough paper), and then press OK.

  5. A CLEANING message displays on the product control panel display while the cleaning is taking place. The cleaning process takes a few minutes to complete. Do not turn the product off until the cleaning process has finished.

  6. When the task is complete, a page will print. Discard the page. You might need to repeat the cleaning process to thoroughly clean the product.

  7. Try printing again to see if the problem is resolved.

If the issue persists, remove the toner cartridge and gently rock it several times to distribute the toner evenly.

Reinstall the print cartridge and try printing.

Also, check the paper type setting for your print job.

You can try updating the printer firmware to see if that helps.

Refer to this link for instructions.

Keep me posted.

Cheers 🙂
