My 10-15 year old Laser Jet Pro, P1606dn won't print.  The notification comes with a soft ware fix required.  I cannot break through to HP to communicate with anyone about their message to me,

Hi @Issedoff

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it must feel to see that “software fix required” message and not be able to get past it.

Let’s walk through some clear steps together to get your LaserJet Pro P1606dn back to printing again. This model is older, so sometimes the driver or spooler service can cause hiccups, but we can usually resolve it with a few careful checks.

Step‑by‑Step Guide

Restart the basics

  • Power off the printer, unplug it for 30 seconds, then reconnect and turn it back on.
  • Restart your computer as well, so the print spooler service refreshes.

Check the connection

  • If you’re using USB, try a different port and cable.
  • If you’re using network printing, confirm the Ethernet cable is secure or the printer is visible on your network.

Update or reinstall the driver

  • On Windows:
    • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    • Right‑click your P1606dn, choose Remove device.
    • Disconnect the printer, then reconnect it. Windows should attempt to reinstall the driver.
    • If it doesn’t, manually install the driver package for the P1606dn.
  • On macOS:
    • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
    • Remove the printer, then add it again. macOS will fetch the correct driver automatically.

Check the Print Spooler service (Windows only)

  • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  • Find Print Spooler, right‑click, and select Restart.
  • This clears stuck jobs and refreshes the service.

Run diagnostics

  • Use the built‑in printer diagnostics tool available in your system’s printer settings. It can automatically detect and repair common issues.

Test with a simple print job

  • Try printing a one‑page Word or Notepad document.
  • If it prints correctly, the issue is resolved. If not, repeat the driver reinstall step carefully.

Note

  • Because of the printer’s age, newer operating systems sometimes struggle with legacy drivers. Reinstalling the driver is often the most effective fix.
  • If you’ve already tried some of these steps, I appreciate the effort—it helps narrow down the cause.
  • Once the driver and spooler are refreshed, the “software fix required” message should disappear.
