LaserJet Pro MFP M477fdn
Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan

The print quality from my LaserJet has decreased dramatically. Very, very light from all cartridges. HP Utility > Supplies Status shows all cartridges at between 30% - 50% with approx 800 pages (Black), 200 (Yellow) remaining. But, HP Utility > Supplies Management says "Cartridge behavior at very low". Had a software update last week I think. May have been when issue started. Not a gradual decrease in quality. One day all was fine, next day, suddenly very poor, light quality.

Hello Will,

Let me advise you to do the following, i actually work for HP, normally this issues can appear after a firmware upgrade specifically on 477 models, try the following steps:

1. Go to set up menu

2. Go to System Set Up

3. Go to Print Quality

4. Select Color Calibration and then press calibrate now

5. after all sounds stop and the printer goes back to ready status without any messages try to print something to see if it improves

6. If the problem persist or got better but still not to the acceptable point, try 2 more color calibration steps and print something out again

7. If the problem persist i would recommend you to reach our customer phone support for the Laserjet devices.

Hopefully this helps you, im really confident it should, cheers to  pkazmercyk for letting me know you needed help.

Regards,

Hi. Thanks for the link. I ran the installer and restarted the printer but with same poor quality. I realized that what's actually happening, at least with the black toner is that all of the black text is actually printing as a very very thin outline which makes it all look grey.

I have the exact same model (M477fdn) since this afternoon. Also updated to the newest firmware (20160331) and I have the same problem. (It's new from the box, so I'm using new and genuine HP toner etc.)

Almost all text characters are printed only by their outline: so letters are white within and have a small black border. I'm running Windows 10 Pro, but the problem is also with the reports printed from the device's touch screen.

Dear HP guys, please help quickly, because the printer is useless this way.

Hi. I just spent quite awhile with support. I had opened a case and through a lot of trial and error, solved it while on the phone with a tech. There is apparently an issue with this printer after firmware update. I would give you the solution, butthere were a lot of steps and I wouldn't be able to recreate them for you. I sent the tech a link to this forum. Hopefully he will contact you. You can also open your own case. Good luck.

Thanks Esteban for the helpful info and thanks pkazmercyk for getting me the help.

So far it seems that a single Color Calibration has in fact solved the problem. I would never have guessed this, as the color output actually was just fine, and it was black text that was the problem. Anyway, thanks guys!
