Duplex has worked on this printer for a long time and all of a sudden (in last week or so) the duplex option on the printer drop down menu disappeared.  I am not sure if it a result of the HP MFP M479fdw getting an update or if it is a result of an IOS change.  I am using IOS  18.7.2 on the IPhone and have the most recent updates on the HP Laserjet.  My Windows 11 Pro also would not print duplex as usual until I turned on duplex as the default on the Laserjet using the Smart HP app,  Anyone having this problem?

I noticed today that the problem has resolved itself. I have “Double-sided” as an option again from my iPhone. I’m on iOS 18.7.2 and my printer is an M479fdw.

Same here - really annoying after working for years

Mine has also worked for years and then recently, poof, gone from iPhone options. I’ve checked everything I could check. Duplex still works fine from a MacBook Pro.

@BillyTex, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the HP M477fdw LaserJet printer.

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution. We hope our assistance has been helpful!

When the duplex option is missing from the printer menu when printing from an iPad or iPhone, it usually indicates a configuration or compatibility issue. Here are the steps to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

  1. Check Printer Compatibility: Ensure that your HP M477fdw LaserJet printer supports duplex (double-sided) printing and that it is AirPrint compatible.

  2. Update Printer Firmware: Make sure that your printer's firmware is up to date. Go to the HP support website and download any available updates for your specific printer model.

  3. Ensure both devices are on the Same Network: Verify that your iPad or iPhone is connected to the same wireless network as the printer.

  4. Use the Latest iOS Version: Check if your iPhone or iPad is running the latest iOS version, as older versions may have limited support for AirPrint features.

  5. AirPrint Configuration:

    • Ensure that your printer is configured properly for AirPrint. This involves checking the AirPrint settings in the Embedded Web Server (EWS) by accessing it through the printer's IP address on a web browser.
    • Make sure that the Bonjour, AirPrint, and IPP Printing settings are enabled.
  6. Check App Settings: In the app you're using to print, verify that the print settings are properly configured to allow duplex printing. Some apps may require you to select double-sided printing manually if available.

  7. Printer Settings Reset:

    • If the issue persists, you may want to reset the printer's network and printing settings to factory defaults.
    • Restarting the printer and iOS device might also assist in resolving network-related issues.
  8. Test: Try printing a document to ensure the duplex option is now available. You might need to manually select duplex in the printer settings for each print job.

I hope this helps!

Take care and have an amazing day!

ditto here. no duplex from either OS-X or iOS.

Thank you for the reply here. This option has suddenly just disappeared. It was working fine with the same printer hardware and same iOS hardware (and same network, files, apps etc). The steps outlined do not make a difference - clearly something systematic has changed which is causing this. My guess would be an incompatibility in the recent releases of iOS. But whatever the cause it is extremely annoying - especially since it does not even work with HP's own software.

Same here. I used to be able to choose two-sided printing from my iphone when printing multiple pages. The setting just disappeared. I can still print two-sided from my computer. This is the printer I am using:

HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw

Did anyone figure this out?
