Does the printer say tray 2 is empty or to load paper? If not then the tray has lifted as I think tray 2 is spring loaded and does not have a lifter motor. Only the accessory tray 3 has a lifter motor. I do not how much you have used this printer but perhaps the pickup rollers are worn. They are hard to come by but below is a link from the UK that gives the part numbers so do a google search for each tray 2 roller part number to locate in your area. You can also try cleaning the exisiting rollers with warm soapy water and dry, especially if you reuse already printed paper since that tends to make the roller smooth and have a hard time picking up the paper.

The display is saying to load paper and at times it says paper jam, does not seem to matter if theirs 5, 50 100 sheets of paper it still dispalys out of paper. Tray 2 to does have a lift motor and not springs, I've seen the lift motor part in the service manual.
The M477 is only 14 months old and has only printed 2,960 pages.
Thanks for the information.

You are correct as you have a lifter drive assembly, however, in looking in the service manual it appears the replacement is very very difficult as many items need to be removed. I do not know of any other thing you can do except to replace the lifter drive or obtain a 550 sheet tray 3 feeder and not use tray 2.
