Can I use the USB cable directly from my PC to the ENVY 7640 and not have to use wireless at all?  If so where can I get the instructions for loading the software

Yes you can. Please use installtion software on the CD which comes with printer or download from the following link

     http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/en7640/EN7640_Full_WebPack_40.11.1135.exe

(a) Run the installtion software,

(b) Select USB connection,

(c) Plug USB cable when the process asking for (not before) and avoid USB 3.0 port,

(d) Follow onscreen instructions.

Regards.
