How do I update firmware for my M252dw printer using a Macbook Pro

Hello @mwaarchitect, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

You can check for and install firmware updates on your HP Color LaserJet Pro M252dw using its control panel or, if HP provides a compatible updater for your macOS version, through your MacBook Pro. Firmware updates can improve printer reliability and address known issues.

Method 1: Update firmware from the printer's control panel

  1. If your printer is connected to a network with internet access, check whether it supports an update directly from its touchscreen.
  2. On the printer's control panel, open Setup.
  3. Navigate to Service > LaserJet Update, if these options are available.
  4. Select Check for Updates Now.
  5. If the printer finds an update, follow the on-screen instructions to install it.
  6. The available menu options may vary depending on the printer's firmware version. If you cannot find these options, use the HP support website to check for an appropriate update.

Method 2: Check for a firmware update using your MacBook Pro

  1. Open the official HP Color LaserJet Pro M252dw Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support
  2. Choose your macOS version, if prompted, and expand the Firmware category.
  3. If HP lists a compatible firmware update or updater for macOS, download it and follow HP's installation instructions.
  4. Connect the printer to your Mac using the connection method supported by the updater, such as USB or a supported network connection.
  5. If the updater detects your printer and offers a newer firmware version, follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.

Important: Do not assume that a firmware updater available for Windows will run on macOS. If HP does not provide a compatible Mac updater, use the printer's supported update method or check HP Support for other available options.

Important precautions

  1. Keep the printer powered on throughout the update.
  2. Do not disconnect the USB or network connection while an update is in progress.
  3. Allow the printer to restart and return to its ready state before printing.
  4. Only install firmware intended for your exact printer model.

If the HP website does not list a firmware update for macOS, your printer may already have the latest available version, or HP may not provide a Mac-compatible updater for this model.

Have a great day!

I'm an HP Employee.
