HP LaserJet Pro M102a
Linux

I have just bought a Laserjet Pro M102A, and the following things happen:

i) when I switch it on, there is a strange grinding sound for about 30 seconds

ii) when it is doing this, the orange triangle (the alert signal or whatever it is called) flashes

iii)  I can send data to the printer, and there are no error messages: it sometimes makes that sound when I'm doing that, but it doesn't print, ever.

I found a post in this forum, describing these symptoms, and I tried the recommended solution (disconnecting the printer,

then plugging directly into a wall socket) but it didn't help matters.

if you are hearing a grinding noise then something is wrong within the printer hardware.  could be a defective gear or possibly a fuser.  you're hearing it when you turn it on because some of the assemblies are moving during that initialization.  you can try seeing if its the cartridge causing the issue by swapping it with another but sounds more like you've got a lemon.

You may have a defective toner cartridge. Remove the toner cartridge, make sure all packing/shipping tape and materials are removed from cartridge and inside of printer. Reinstall printer and try again. If still grinds, remove cartridge and close lid to see if printer runs without grinding. If yes, check cartridge and maybe replace.
