This is on an HP LaserJet Pro 4301 series printer that lets me scan, but when I try to save the document, the program shuts down. I have updated the printer's firmware and software. I have a problem with several computers

Hi @Torx1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP LaserJet Pro 4301 series can scan successfully, but the software closes when you try to save the document, and this happens on multiple computers. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Confirm which scan application is being used
Check whether the scan is being done from HP Scan / HP Smart / HP Universal Scan software.
A specific application crashing usually points to a software or permission issue rather than the printer.

Test saving to a different location
When prompted to save, choose a simple local folder such as Documents or Desktop.
Saving to network drives, OneDrive, or protected folders can cause the program to close unexpectedly.

Run the scan software as administrator.
Right-click the scan application and choose Run as administrator.
This ensures the program has permission to write files to the system.

Check default file type settings
Change the scan output format to PDF or JPG instead of the current selection.
Corrupt or unsupported file format handlers can cause crashes at the save step.

Disable third-party security software temporarily
Antivirus or endpoint protection can block file creation and force the app to close.
Temporarily disable it and test saving a scan.

Reset the scan application settings
Open the scan software settings and restore defaults if available.
Corrupted user preferences can cause the application to crash when saving.

Verify Windows user profile behavior
Log in with a different Windows user account and test scanning and saving.
If it works, the issue is related to the original user profile.

Reinstall only the scanning components
Uninstall the HP scan software, restart the computer, and then reinstall the latest version.
This refreshes file-handling and save-path components without affecting printing.

Check Windows Event Viewer for application errors
Open Event Viewer and review application logs at the time of the crash.
Repeated faulting module entries confirm a software-level issue rather than printer hardware.

I hope this helps.

I have done everything that you have stated in your comment.  The problem is now happening on ink jet printers and 479fdw printers. I have updated the driver. Removed the drivers and reinstalled. Updated the firmware. It is happening to both local and network printers. Everything was working fine until last week.

Hi @Torx1,

Thank you for the response.

I understand your HP LaserJet (4301 series, M428fdw, and other models) can scan successfully, but the scan software closes or crashes as soon as you click Save, and this started recently across multiple computers and printers. Let’s go through a few focused steps to check what could be causing this.

Confirm this is not printer hardware related
The scan completes correctly and only fails at the Save step.
This confirms the issue is software-side, not the printer, scanner, or firmware.

Identify the common factor across all affected systems
Note whether the same scan application is used (HP Smart, HP Scan, or HP Universal Scan).
When multiple printer models fail at the same time, this usually points to a recent software update.

Change the default save format
Before scanning, set the output format to PDF or JPG explicitly.
Recent updates have caused crashes when certain default formats or profiles are used.

Change the default save location
Set the save location to a simple local folder such as Documents or Desktop.
Avoid OneDrive, network shares, redirected folders, or protected paths.

Disable automatic file naming or post-processing
Turn off options like OCR, auto-crop, auto-enhance, or auto-open after scan.
These features run at the Save stage and are known to trigger crashes.

Completely remove HP scan software (clean uninstall)
Uninstall HP Smart / HP Scan from Apps & Features.
Restart the computer before reinstalling to clear background services.

Reinstall the scan software only (not full driver)
Reinstall the latest HP scan software version.
Do not install optional add-ons or additional scan components unless required.

Test with Windows built-in scanning tools
Use Windows Fax and Scan or the Windows Scan app from Microsoft Store.
If saving works there, this confirms the HP scan app is the source of the problem.

Check Windows update timing
Review Windows Update history from last week.
A recent Windows or .NET update can break scan app save functions across multiple devices.

Check Event Viewer for application crashes
Open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application.
Look for repeated faulting modules when the scan app closes to confirm a software crash pattern.

I hope this helps.

There are no error in the event viewer that I see dealing with the crashing of hp scan,

This problem is affecting several users. There were no issues with scanning throughout last year and the beginning of this year. Everyone was able to scan until last week.  The users who are having this problem have the LaserJet 4301 and are connecting via USB.

Hi @Torx1,

Thank you for getting back. Let’s go through a few additional steps to narrow this down.

Confirm the connection type being used
You mentioned all affected users are connected via USB.
This is important because recent scan-app issues have been more common with USB TWAIN/WIA communication than with network scanning.

Test scanning over network instead of USB (important isolation step)
Connect one LaserJet 4301 to Wi-Fi or Ethernet and add it as a network printer.
Then test scanning and saving again to see if the crash still occurs.

Test scanning using Windows Scan instead of HP Scan/HP Smart
Open the Windows Scan app and scan a document to Desktop.
If saving works there, the issue is isolated to the HP scan application layer.

Change the scanner driver mode (WIA vs TWAIN)
In the scan application, switch the scan source/driver type if available.
TWAIN drivers over USB can crash during file-write operations after recent Windows updates.

Check Windows “Controlled Folder Access”
Go to Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Ransomware protection.
Temporarily disable Controlled Folder Access or allow the scan application.

Check default save folder redirection
Confirm Documents or Desktop folders are not redirected to OneDrive or a network location.
Folder redirection commonly causes crashes at the Save stage.

Install the HP Universal Scan driver package
Install the latest HP Universal Scan Driver for the LaserJet Pro series.
This replaces older USB scan components that may conflict with recent Windows updates.

Check .NET Desktop Runtime installation
Ensure the latest Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime is installed.
HP scan apps rely on .NET components during the save process.

Test with a new Windows profile on one affected PC
Create a temporary local Windows user and test scanning via USB.
This confirms whether the issue is profile-level or system-level.

Why this pattern matters
Because this started last week, affects multiple users, and occurs across different printer models but mainly over USB, the most likely cause is a recent Windows component or USB scan driver interaction, not printer firmware or hardware.

If scanning works over network connection or Windows Scan, that will confirm the USB scan software path is where the failure is happening.

I hope this helps.

I figured out a work around by using the windows scan app, that tells me the problem is with the HP scan application layer.
